IMPLANTOPRÓTESIS
Implant-supported prosthesis
Implant-supported prosthesis is a safe, reliable, and proven solution designed to permanently and naturally replace your missing teeth, restoring your quality of life by allowing you to smile and eat with confidence.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is an artificial “root” that replaces the root of a lost tooth. They are usually screw-shaped and made of titanium, a biocompatible metal that integrates with the bone and whose extensive documentation supports years of experience.
What alternative do I have if I don’t want dental implants?
The traditional and alternative method for replacing 1 or 2 lost teeth is the partial fixed prosthesis or traditional bridge, but for this, it is necessary to have healthy adjacent teeth that can be prepared, providing the necessary space to securely hold the bridge that will fill in the missing tooth or teeth.
This traditional method is a great fixed solution, although it does not stimulate the underlying bone, and therefore, in the long term, it causes bone loss and gum recession.
In the case of not having adjacent teeth, the only alternative to implants is removable partial dentures.
What happens if I don’t replace missing teeth?
Losing teeth has several consequences:
- Bone atrophy: the bone where the tooth was located is resorbed;
- Tooth movement: neighboring teeth shift into the empty space, tilting, disrupting occlusal function, altering aesthetics, and losing the necessary space for replacement;
- Loss of contact point: as the teeth tilt, they no longer touch, leaving open spaces where food can get trapped, leading to cavities, etc.;
- Overload of the remaining teeth: when teeth are missing, the ones that remain have to work harder, and in the long run, consequences are suffered;
- Joint problems (TMJ): the alteration of the dental position changes the joint position. It begins to function incorrectly, causing pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and creating cranio-mandibular dysfunction (CMD).
What does the procedure involve?
- Comprehensive examination: The team of experts at Clínica Dental Murtra will always plan each case in advance using the most advanced 3D technology, in order to determine how many implants will be necessary, what dimensions and positions they should have in the mouth to optimally restore function and aesthetics.
- Surgical placement of implants: In the dental office and under local anesthesia, the implants are strategically placed, and whenever possible, temporary teeth are placed so that you can continue to show a smile from day one.
- Healing/osseointegration period: After the surgical procedure, the bone around the implants must mature and "lock" the implant. This is a waiting phase that can last from 2 to 6 months (depending on the complexity of the case), and for this reason, provisionals are usually provided.
- Abutment connection: Once the healing period has passed, it is necessary to place prosthetic abutments that allow us to connect the implant to the prosthesis, traversing the gum thickness in a personalized way.
- Prosthetic rehabilitation: Just like with a traditional fixed prosthesis, appointments must be scheduled for taking impressions, fitting the framework, trying in the teeth, checking shape and color. Everything necessary so that, once the case is completed, both aesthetics and function are fully restored.
